"Rome's first official Christian church — and the oldest dedicated to Mary"
Founded ~340 AD by Pope Julius I on the spot where Pope Callixtus I had set up Rome's first house-church a century earlier. The 12th-century rebuild reused 22 Egyptian granite columns from the nearby Baths of Caracalla. The apse holds two layered masterpieces: a Byzantine mosaic of Christ and the Virgin enthroned together, and below it Pietro Cavallini's 1291 Stories of the Virgin — the breakthrough that broke from Byzantine rigidity and pointed toward Giotto.
Insider tip: Look up at Domenichino's 1617 coffered wooden ceiling with the Assunta at its centre — and ask about the legend of the Fons Olei, the spring of oil said to have burst from this ground in 38 BC.

Sightseeing Tips
Save money, skip queues, stay safe
  • Roma Pass: 48h (€32) or 72h (€52) — free entry to 1–2 museums + unlimited public transport. Worth it if you visit 2+ paid attractions.
  • Free first Sundays: State museums are free on the first Sunday of each month. Expect crowds.
  • Skip the line: Always book tickets online. Walk-up queues at the Colosseum and Vatican can be 1–3 hours.
  • Best time to visit: Early morning (opening time) or late afternoon. Midday crowds are brutal, especially in summer.
  • Water fountains: Rome has 2,500+ free drinking fountains (nasoni). Bring a reusable bottle!
  • Watch for scams: Avoid "gladiators" wanting photos for money, people tying bracelets on your wrist, and unofficial tour guides at attractions.
  • Dress code: Churches and the Vatican require covered shoulders and knees. Carry a light scarf.
  • Walking route: Pantheon → Trevi → Spanish Steps → Piazza del Popolo is a beautiful 90-min walk through the historic centre.
