"Rome's first official Christian church — and the oldest dedicated to Mary"
Founded ~340 AD by Pope Julius I on the spot where Pope Callixtus I had set up Rome's first house-church a century earlier. The 12th-century rebuild reused 22 Egyptian granite columns from the nearby Baths of Caracalla. The apse holds two layered masterpieces: a Byzantine mosaic of Christ and the Virgin enthroned together, and below it Pietro Cavallini's 1291 Stories of the Virgin — the breakthrough that broke from Byzantine rigidity and pointed toward Giotto.
Insider tip: Look up at Domenichino's 1617 coffered wooden ceiling with the Assunta at its centre — and ask about the legend of the Fons Olei, the spring of oil said to have burst from this ground in 38 BC.
